Painting Door Knobs

If you're like me, shiny brass door knobs don't really look awesome in my opinion.  They tend to date a house really quickly.  Replacing all hardware for us was out of the question because it was not an expense our cash flow was able to take a hit for right now, but we had some friends who have painted their door knobs (which look awesome!) and I've painted over brass chandeliers & lamps in the past, soooo how hard could it be, right?!  To do this project, we read some advice online and followed the steps Young House Love took when they did a similar project.  Here is our play by play...

1. Remove all hardware from the doors. (we only did interior doors)

Here are the items we used, along with some leftover cardboard we had in the garage.

2.  Take the steel wool and go over each piece.  The rubbed scratches will help with adhesion.

3.  Wipe the door knob with a lint-free rag saturated with the deglosser & allow it to dry fully.

4.  Next, place the door knobs in a cardboard box so you can easily spray each angle & fully cover with spray paint.

We used a couple pieces of scrap wood to put the smaller pieces of hardware all facing up.

5.  Apply 2 -3 light coats of spray paint and let it fully dry.  We used the Rustoleum Universal spray which has primer & paint together.  Guys be prepared for this product because it is tough stuff!  In a good way.  If you get it everywhere (which I tend to always do), then be ready to scrub hands and feet 1000 times before this fun stuff will come off.  Hopefully it stays on the door knobs as well as it stays on my skin!  If you use a spray paint that doesn't have the primer included, this should probably be an extra step added in. 

Here they are after 2 light coats.  I had to do touch ups after this cuz I want these puppies covered really well.

It might be a little while before these lovelies are up in the house so I'll post after pics later.  So far the transformation looks pretty good!
